Academic half-hours – Stowaway stories: the globalised world and invasive pathogen species in Europe

Human society has undergone intense globalisation in a few generations, with the increase in the movement of people and goods leading to an unprecedented movement of previously locally isolated biodiversity. We will use the examples of parasites and pathogens associated with aquatic and wetland ecosystems to show how unwanted introductions are affecting the life of European fauna. We will discuss, among others, tapeworms and nematodes in fish, giant flukes, or chytridiomycosis in amphibians.
