Lyme disease (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe and worldwide. Southern Bohemia has long been one of the largest natural outbreaks of tick-borne diseases in Europe. Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the Borrelia burgdorferi complex. They can infect humans and other hosts and persist for a long time or even for life. Understanding how the disease spreads is essential for implementing effective control measures. Knowledge of the current diversity and invasiveness of Lyme strains can serve effective prevention programmes, as it can help predict the possible clinical manifestations of the disease. These data are essential for the development of reliable laboratory and clinical tests for the detection of pathogens, as well as for the development of better means of diagnosing Lyme disease.
